Mission Statement
The American Institute of Buddhist Studies was founded in 1972 at the suggestion of H.H. the Dalai Lama and at the behest of the late Ven. Geshe Wangyal. Its ambitious mandate has been to create and support the necessary institutional framework within which to produce critical, readable, contemporary translations of the 3,600+ classical source texts of the "liberating arts and sciences" of the Indo-Tibetan civilization preserved in the Tibetan Tanjur (bstan 'gyur) and associated literature.
