Two New Translation Series

The American Institute of Buddhist Studies (AIBS), in affiliation with the Columbia University Center for Buddhist Studies and Tibet House US, announces two new translation series, the Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences and the Treasury of the Indic Sciences. These series present translations from Indo-Tibetan civilization's classic "liberating arts and sciences" preserved over centuries in the Tibetan Tanjur (bstan 'gyur) and associated literature. Our current translations in both Treasuries represent invaluable resources from our global cultural, philosophical, spiritual, and scientific heritage and contribute significantly to contemporary discourse laying the foundation for a truly global renaissance.

Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences

The Tibetan Tanjur and Associated Literature

Founded for the primary purpose of translating the Tanjur, the AIBS is working to fulfill this ambitious mandate by providing long-term guidance, coordination, and support for the production of authoritative English translations, studies, and editions of every text in this invaluable treasury. The ongoing results of these efforts are being published by the AIBS in the Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences.

Treasury of the Indic Sciences

For over fifteen hundred years, the scholars representing various Buddhist traditions were actively engaged in dialogue and debate with representatives of various Vedist, Hindu, Jainist, and other religious and secular traditions. In this cosmopolitan milieu, the shared arts and sciences of all these Indic traditions were constantly refined and developed. In full acknowledgement of this broader context, the AIBS is widening its Buddhistic mandate with the inauguration of a second series entitled the Treasury of the Indic Sciences. In this series, the AIBS is publishing translations of influential classics from the diversity of Indic traditions.
